Become a leading blockchain engineer.
Applications for the Academy are now closed. New cohorts are enrolled periodically — be the first to find out when the next Academy is open for applications.
As an official partner institution of the program, the University of Buenos Aires will host the next wave of the Polkadot Blockchain Academy.
The Polkadot Blockchain Academy is the first of its kind — a classroom-based educational program covering the conceptual underpinnings and the hands-on application of blockchain technology, using Polkadot and Substrate as the foundations.
Founded by Gavin Wood, the Academy is run by leading engineers and researchers from the Polkadot ecosystem, Parity Technologies, and the Web3 Foundation.
The goal is creating a pioneering course which equips engineers with all the necessary knowledge to build blockchains.
The curriculum covers disciplines such as economics, governance, game theory, cryptography, peer-based and distributed network systems, systems and API design, and much more. In addition to theoretical modules, students will apply their knowledge and build blockchains and parachains using Substrate, pallets and FRAME.
Who is the academy for?
The Academy is for curious minds. It’s for people who are looking beyond just code, and want to become significant contributors to the blockchain industry. If you’re passionate about working towards this goal, the Academy is for you.
Students are provided with high intensity, high value, high touch, in-person teaching and support. All the necessary tools, information and support are included to help you successfully build in the blockchain space, and fuel your innovation.
You do not need to have any prior blockchain knowledge to enrol. The Academy is an excellent entry point for passionate software engineers of any experience level who are eager to move from Web2 or low-level programming to Web3.
The Academy is also appropriate for experienced Web3 developers who want to deep dive into Substrate and learn more about the architectural principles of the blockchain industry.
Communicating securely in the presence of an adversary facilitates everything from civil disobedience to online shopping. It is foundational for blockchains.
Economics and Game Theory
Financial and political systems are under constant threat of attack. By understanding the strategic interactions of rational actors, such systems can be designed securely through proper incentives.
Core Blockchain Concepts
A blockchain is comprised of P2P networking, distributed consensus, and many other constituents. In this module, we look at these subsystems, explore how they fit together, and understand why a blockchain may be desirable to begin with.
Learn the architecture and design of Substrate, the production-ready modular framework for building blockchains, and get hands-on experience working with it.
FRAME and Pallets
Learn the ins and outs of building Substrate blockchains using FRAME, the Rust-based DSL that makes it easy to compose discrete pieces of logic into a meaningful application.
Polkadot, Parachains, and Cumulus
Polkadot is the heterogeneous multichain network. Learn about the rights and responsibilities of the various chains, how they operate together to share security, and how it is all governed.
Cross-Consensus Messaging (XCM)
Explore how bespoke blockchains and smart contracts can exchange messages in the Polkadot network and beyond, and understand the associated security guarantees.
By allowing users to deploy executable code, smart contracts allow individuals to have arbitrary interactions with one another without requiring trust.

What is the goal of the Academy? keyboard_arrow_right
The goal of the Academy is to seed our ecosystem with smart and Web3-educated engineering participants, either as new parachain founders, Parity employees, or as parachain/ecosystem team employees. The Polkadot Blockchain Academy is our flagship program to help speed up the adoption of Web3 technology.
Is this a bootcamp? keyboard_arrow_right
No. The Academy is not a bootcamp or a Summer program which provides lightweight training online. Nor is it for people who want to focus on becoming cryptography experts. At the Academy we’ll comprehensively teach you how to build and deploy blockchain technology correctly using already established cryptographic techniques.
Who can apply? keyboard_arrow_right
We are looking for developers of all experience levels who are either already working in, or who are interested in moving into Web3. You will need to pass the selection process and a Rust entrance exam before you can join the Academy.
What Rust do you need to know to join the Academy? keyboard_arrow_right
All students will have to pass a Rust Entrance Exam in order to attend. At minimum, you will need to be familiar with Chapters 1 - 11 as well as Chapters 13 and 19 of the Rust Book. If time permits, it would be helpful to read the entire book and complete the exercises within it.
How long is it? keyboard_arrow_right
The Academy is a carefully devised 4-week academic in-person program covering both foundational theoretical concepts and practical programming knowledge. This gives you both a deep conceptual understanding, as well as practical knowledge that you can apply in the future.
Is it an online program? keyboard_arrow_right
No. The Polkadot Blockchain Academy is an in-person program which gives access to key industry sector leaders, subject matter experts, practitioners and potential peers as they provide lectures and hands-on exercises.
How much does it cost? keyboard_arrow_right
At the Academy we believe in sharing knowledge to build a better future. In order to support this mission, the tuition, accommodation, and most food costs are covered for those who are offered a place, apart from travel costs to and from the host city. We do ask funded ecosystem teams who are sending team members to attend the course to cover course costs for their students.
Does it offer a certification? keyboard_arrow_right
Yes. At the end of the Academy your work will be examined and graded. If you graduate successfully you will receive the Polkadot Blockchain Academy Graduation Certificate and will have the opportunity to apply for a job at Parity Technologies, and teams within the Polkadot ecosystem.
Where does the academy take place? keyboard_arrow_right
The Academy is organized periodically and moves to new locations. The next Academy will take place at the University of Buenos Aires from January 10th, 2023, until February 10th, 2023.
